Alexander Roschanek
Cinematographer

“I know I can trust flowtech100 to help me capture beautiful images in an instant, even shooting from very low or high positions.”

As a freelance camera operator for Austria’s ORF network, Alexander Roschanek travels the world on a broad range of documentary topics across news, sports, and culture.
After testing the all-new flowtech100 at the South Korean winter games earlier this year, Alex has adopted it as his go-to tripod for any type of on-location shoot. flowtech100 gives him a stable platform even when loaded with heavier ENG and cinematic camera payloads, and its fast and easy setup and fine-tuning means he can always get the shots he needs.
“We’re often working in editor-cameraman pairs when on the road, which means I usually don’t have an assistant to help me set up,” Alex says. “flowtech100 is a huge asset because it has so many great features that make ultra-fast setup and adjustment really easy.”

Dan Martland
Freelance Cameraman

“When I first saw the 75mm version of flowtech, I knew it was a game changer. I’ve been waiting patiently for flowtech100, and now that it’s here, I’m madly in love with it. Honestly, Sachtler will have to work really hard to improve on flowtech!”

Prior to setting up his own shop in 2015, freelance camera operator Dan Martland logged over 20 years of full-time experience with numerous UK broadcasters including ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, and BSkyB. Today, he’s a sought-after professional for a wide range of projects including interviews, documentaries, live sports, corporate productions, and commercial work.

Dan goes where the news happens, taking him to interesting and high-profile on-location shoots. Most recently this has included the most renowned U.S.-based tennis tournament and the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Dan agreed to test the new flowtech100 carbon-fibre tripod at both of these high-profile events, and was thoroughly impressed.

For both the tennis championship and the UNGA, Dan loaded the flowtech100 with his go-to payload, a Sachtler Video 18 S1 fluid head supporting a Sony F5 4K camera. In addition, the camera was outfitted with a bulky Canon CN7 120mm zoom lens and a battery mounted on an ENG dock, and the tripod also carried a monitor.

“Even with that beast of a payload, weighing at least 25 pounds, flowtech100 offered outstanding stability,” Dan comments. “But another great thing about this tripod/head combination is that I can go really quickly to a lighter camera, even my Sony a7S Mark II, just by adjusting the friction on the counterbalances.”

flowtech100’s benefits of a super-fast setup and takedown really grabbed Dan’s attention.

“Many of my jobs require me to be super-fast and reactive, and I can’t have equipment slowing me down,” he notes. “With my other lightweight 100mm tripods, I’m always fighting with the twist locks on the legs to make the fine adjustments I need to, and I have to take the camera off and set it somewhere that might not be good for it, like sand on a beach. But with flowtech100, I can leave the payload on and simply release each leg with the quick-release brakes at the top. Within an instant, and without bending over, I can deploy each leg at the exact height needed.”

Ken Cavalli
News Cameraman

“Overall, flowtech100 is an amazing tripod. Sachtler and Vinten have really outdone themselves, and they’ve created a tool that should be in every camera operator’s arsenal.”

After 30-plus years in the business, Ken has deep grounding and expertise in the world of ENG cameras and equipment — perfect credentials for giving the all-new flowtech100 tripod a trial run.

Ken field-tested flowtech100 at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyongyang, South Korea and also for NBC’s coverage of the recent Northern California wildfires. Most of the time, he was working with a heavy payload of 20kg (45 pounds) consisting of a Sony PMWX500 ENG camera, a Sachtler Video 18 S2 fluid head, and a teleprompter.

“Right away, I knew flowtech100 was special. It’s unlike any other tripod I’ve ever used,” Ken comments.“Even with all that weight, the flowtech100 was completely stable with no torque at all in the legs. Plus, the ergonomics are fantastic — with the quick-release brakes at the top, you can set it up and adjust it in an instant without having to bend over.”

He added, “The shape of the legs makes flowtech100 really comfortable to carry on your shoulder. Even the handle is in the right place for easy carrying. And instead of the traditional bungy fasteners, the magnetic clasps mean you can snap the legs together for transport and then be off to the next shoot, literally in seconds. These seem like small details but they make a huge difference when you’re in a hurry.”

These features, in addition to flowtech100’s extremely light weight, made working with the tripod effortless as Ken and his crew moved around to different venues at the games, some of them icy with uneven ground and other less-than-ideal shooting conditions. flowtech100’s rugged carbon-fibre construction especially paid off in the dirt and soot of the wildfires. “flowtech100 was a huge asset in the extreme fire conditions, where easy setups and quick breakdowns were crucial. We never knew when we’d have to move instantly to get out of a dangerous area,” Ken notes.

Darren Bramley
ITV Daytime Head of Cameras

“Nothing compares to flowtech100’s rugged build quality and attention to detail. It’s a practical solution that can meet the everyday needs of even the most demanding of camera operators.”

Over his 26-year career, Darren has worked with many different brands and types of tripods — but he’s never seen anything quite like the all-new flowtech100.

“We participated in trials of the first flowtech in the Vinten series, flowtech75, so we know what a game-changer this technology is. When we got word of flowtech100, our staff operators and freelancers alike were very keen to put it through its paces,” Darren comments. “The new tripod brings flowtech’s benefits of light weight, high stability, and ease of use to the professional 100mm bowl size that’s so prevalent in ENG today.”

Darren and his crew tested flowtech100 with a Vinten Vision 100 head carrying either a Sony 2500 or Sony 1750 camera with wide-angle or standard EFP lenses, using the gear on live programs in both a studio environment and for stand-up interviews outside the ITV Daytime facility.

Besides providing a firm and stable platform for such workload, flowtech100 is extremely lightweight and fast to deploy —two more important attributes for a fast-moving live production. “The tripod more than lived up to our crew’s expectations,” Darren notes. “We often have to quickly reposition cameras during advertisement breaks, sometimes in under a minute. But with flowtech100, operators can just pick their position, open the tripod, and undo just three quick-release clamps at the top of the legs, and they’re ready to shoot in no time. Everyone loves the intuitive way the legs deploy and retract instantly.”

Renea Veneri Stewart
Producer and Cinematographer

“flowtech100 is really amazing. It’s a great system – not only fast and convenient, but you can feel the quality and craftsmanship. It’s going to become my go-to-tripod!”

Renea Veneri Stewart is an Emmy-winning producer and cinematographer, and her passion for the beauty and culture of the Hawai’ian Islands shows in every aspect of her work.
“We have always been Sachtler and Vinten fans, and our Sachtler FSB 8 system with Speed Lock legs is a mainstay on ‘Family Ingredients,’ she comments. “We’re also big believers in the flowtech75, so we were thrilled to be able to test-drive flowtech100.” Renea was struck right away with flowtech100’s ruggedness. “We were testing it in some pretty extreme conditions, and we were setting up on a very rocky area of the eastern Oahu shore. There’s also no shortage of salt in our marine environment here. But flowtech100 held up beautifully in the elements and was really easy to clean once we were done. She adds, “The toughness and high-quality engineering gives me great peace of mind, especially when we’re on the road, and flowtech is no exception. I know this gear will stand up to a lot of handling from planes and trains to boats and cars, and that’s really important when we’re on location and can’t just go to a rental house to get another tripod.”

Toni Tillmann
DP, Moment Pictures

“This tripod is a no brainer for any kind of shoot. Whether we set it up in a lake or on the side of a sand dune, it can handle any type of terrain.”

Moment Pictures - a production company founded by brothers Andi, Toni and Michi Tillman has an outstanding reputation for outdoor adventure films set in stunning locations around the world. They recently test-drove the all-new flowtech100 carbon-fibre tripod for the latest episode of Scott Sports’ promotional video series “Chasing Trail. Filmed on the remote and rugged mountain-biking trails of La Palma, Canary Islands, DP Toni was blown away by its light weight, fast and easy setup, stability for heavier payloads, and versatility for unusual camera angles, all of which were critical requirements for this shoot.
“This tripod is a no brainer for any kind of shoot. Whether we set it up in a lake or on the side of a sand dune, it can handle any type of terrain, said Toni. Adding “a little rinse will easily remove any dirt or sand from the carbon-fibre components. But its flexibility for any kind of camera angle is what really sets the flowtech100 apart from the competition.” Trying to get a level shot while standing on the side of a steep mountain face is a good example, the legs of the tripod adjacent to the mountain must be retracted and angled almost horizontally, while the downhill leg needs to be fully extended. “We’re able to achieve this type of configuration because we can remove the mid-level spreader, which also allows us to go super-low for ground-level shots,” he explains. “Even with these types of shots and a heavier payload, flowtech100 provides perfect torsional stability for precise long-lens pans – and I don’t have to bring along a high hat or a bean bag.”
Toni concludes, “flowtech100 is a game changer. We really appreciate the initiative that has been taken to push the evolution of this classical part of equipment. I was really stoked to try the flowtech100 in La Palma and can’t wait to bring it along on one of our next adventures.”

Thorsten Milse
Wildlife Videographer / Photographer

“The flowtech 100 is a perfect tripod in just about every way.”

Over his 20-year career, professional photographer Thorsten Milse has travelled the world – from the wilderness of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast to the frigid wastes of the Antarctic, capturing the personalities of animals ranging from polar bears to elephants within their native landscapes. His passion for nature and wildlife is on stunning display in his images, which have appeared in the world’s most prestigious nature publications and have garnered awards such as BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the Grand Prize in Nature’s Best Photo Competition.
“The new flowtech100 has all of the features I really came to appreciate about the flowtech75, like the quick-release brakes and the hinge lock mechanism that make setup and adjustment incredibly fast and easy,” he notes. “And flexible, fast setup was critical when capturing the lemurs, who move really quickly in the high treetops.” Another valuable flowtech 100 feature, especially for photographing wildlife, is the tripod’s ability to adjust almost instantly to heights ranging from 26cm to 153cm without the mid-level spreader. “The flowtech 100 allowed us to get to a really low position fast, which is really important for capturing those fleeting ground shots,” Thorsten explains. “With the lemurs, sometimes I only had a few seconds to get the shot. But I was able to approach with my camera and lens in one hand and the tripod in the other, open the legs with my foot and adjust the height, snap on the camera, and shoot.”
